Hikaru Nakamura vs Alexander Grischuk | Sinquefield Cup 2018 | Saint Lou...

Nakamura, Hikaru (2777) vs. Grischuk, Alexander (2766)

Sinquefield Cup | Saint Louis | Round 3.4 | 20 Aug 2018 | ECO: C55 | 0-1

Alexander Grischuk used a healthy space advantage in round three to pick off three extra pawns against Hikaru Nakamura. The American saw the specter of a fortress, but it wasn't there. Grischuk's win bumps him up into a four-way tie for the lead, along with Magnus Carlsen, Levon Aronian, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who all drew today. The quartet is all sitting on 2.0/3.

Magnus Carlsen VS Sergey Karjakin | Sinquefield Cup 2018 | rd 2

Carlsen, Magnus (2842) vs. Karjakin, Sergey (2773)

Sinquefield Cup | Saint Louis | Round 2.3 | 19 Aug 2018 | ECO: A17 | 1-0

Whenever the competitors from the 2016 World Chess Championship meet over the board, it is certain to be a grueling battle. In this game, Carlsen sustained pressure throughout. Karjakin defended admirably, but he went awry after over six hours of warding the World Champion off. It's truly exhausting to fight off an advantage where one mistake can be fatal

Morphy’s Opera House Game | Paul Morphy vs the Duke of Brunswick and Cou...

Paul Morphy was an American chess player, considered by many to be

the greatest chess master of the 19th century. He was born in 1837, and

never held the title of “grandmaster,” as such recognition did not exist

at the time. Duke Karl and Count Isouard were two players who

collaborated to compete against the American prodigy. This game was

played in Paris, France, in 1858. It is one of the most beautiful chess

games ever played, and my personal favorite. Many refer to it as

“Morphy’s Opera House Game.” In this game, Paul Morphy played

with white pieces, while Duke Karl and Count Isouard played with

black pieces.

Mamedyarov VS Wesely So | Sinquefield Cup 2018 | D30: Queen's Gambit Dec...

Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar (2801) vs. So, Wesley (2780)
Sinquefield Cup | St. Louis | Round 1 | 18 Aug 2018 | 1-0

So was likely referring to a series of seemingly random knight moves. His steed might have picked up a lot of stamps on its passport, but all it really did was help cluster White's forces in a tight formation in the center of the board.

Mamedyarov told Chess.com that beating So is a good omen. Prior to today, they had drawn every other classical game they'd ever played, except for one.

"I beat him with Black when nobody could beat him and it really helped my game," Mamedyarov told Chess.com about that lone win, at the 2017 Gashimov Memorial. The Azeri said his victory helped catalyze his career -- Mamedyarov went from 2772 to 2800 for the first time about a month later. Shak is now hoping for a similar omen.  https://www.chess.com/

Anatoly Karpov vs Artur Yusupov
Candidates Match (1989), London ENG, rd 8, Oct-17
Queen's Gambit Declined: Lasker Defense (D56) · 1-0

This fantastic game has caused 14...exd4 to disappear from tournament play. Although Black may be able to play a little more accurately, it is clear that White enjoys a very dangerous initiative.
